I Can Buy it Cheaper on the Internet

 
Sound familiar? Probably yes. Or how about “How To Build A Chinese Chopper”? Probably not. Believe it or not these two phrases actually mean the same thing. Confused? I’ll explain. When shopping for part(s), what is the deciding factor for purchasing? Most people would say price, and that is probably the # 1 mistake you could make. Let me tell you why. A cheap price on a product should raise a red fl ag in your mind because it is a direct indication of country of origin.

Got Fuel Injection? If Not, You Will
 
“It is estimated that in ten years time, carbureted motorcycles as we know it, will be deemed obsolete”. That was the statement made by a representative of Zippers Performance at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati Ohio this past January. Although Fuel injection has been in production on Harley’s since about 1996, it is still in it’s beginning stages. It will take about ten years for fuel injection to actually come up to speed. Like the carburetor, fuel injection will “evolve”. Before we jump into what we can do to make fuel injected Harley’s run better, lets go over the basics.

Greetings! As the ever-changing technology evolves concerning fuel injected Harleys, I write this article as an update to a previously written article. Fuel injected Harley- Davidsons are here to stay, so get used to it. It is my opinion that if you have a choice between an injected and a carbureted Harley, choose the injected bike. Far more technology (money) is being pumped into it. Late model fuel injected Harleys now come with a “closed loop” system, as opposed to earlier models being “open looped”. Just like automobiles, the closed loop systems have oxygen sensors located in the exhaust near the heads. Reason being is so that the E.C.M. (electronic control module), can make changes in fuel delivery while the motor is running by analyzing the exhaust gasses.

This is a term that many of us older riders have experienced. The example that comes to mind is the Shovel Head unleaded fuel conversion. This process requires removal of all four valves, guides, seats, and spring collars and machining. This was costly and today metal fatigue will become a deciding factor for total replacement. A brand new set of S&S heads, which will move more air and can be specified for duel spark plugs enabling higher compression. Only about one third more money than you are about to drop on the old tired set. I used the old Shovel Head as an example because they survived a technology surge in engine control and management, fuel delivery and metallurgy advances in many applications.

Custom bike styles or "trends” are similar to automobile designs, with each new style coming to the market brings new ideas. Each year, my business attends the Easyriders V-Twin Expo held in Cincinnati, Ohio. The event introduces all the latest and greatest product ideas that will hit the custom bike market. Many different creative products will put a twist on the way we build and ride our two-wheeled machines. One of these new products to hit the market is an automatic clutch. I actually saw it at last year's show, but this year brought a stronger presence. We installed one and I have to tell you it's the greatest rider-friendly product I've ever worked with. As soon as the bike started and began to idle, I could shift into first without pulling in the clutch. Pulling up to a stop? Just lower the r.p.m. and hit the brakes. No need to pull in the clutch.

Where Does It Go?
 
US Flag Only If only the US Flag is on your bike, it should either be at the center, or to its “marching right” - on the right side of the motorcycle to the rider’s perspective when facing forward. US Flag And One Other Flag Of Any Type If the US Flag is on your bike with another, it should be to its “marching right” - on the right side of the motorcycle to the rider’s perspective. If the other flag is that of another nation, it should be the same size and at the same height of the US Flag - NO flag should ever be displayed higher than the US Flag. US Flag And More Than One Other Non-National Flag If the US Flag is on your bike with several other non-national flags (POW/MIA, ALR, Eagles, Service Banners, etc.) , it should be at center and higher than any of the other flags.
